Teaser Tuesday (4): The Host

From The Host by Stephenie Meyer, page 37:

"'And eat something, please. I don't want your stomach to give us away.' He grins, and his eyes crinkle up, fanning lines out of the corners. My heart gives one hard thump, and I know I will wait here if it takes him all night."
I have to confess that I am not particularly enjoying this book so far.I thought that I would, especially after reading Juju's review of the book. She was spot on in saying that this book is entirely different than Twilight -- the problem that I'm facing is that so far I don't feel that it has any of the good qualities of the author's previous books, leaving me a bit befuddled and agitated by the wordiness.

I'm getting into it, but the process is slow. Regardless of how I'm feeling, I will definitely be finishing, hopefully on a better note than I started. I've read so many good reviews I'd hate to be the first negative, especially as a Twilight fan!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current read
* Open to a random page
* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

  1. Great teaser! I heard the beginning of this book is slow, but it picks up later. Hopefully that is the case.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  2. I have to be honest - I've read a lot of Meyer teasers and I've never been struck. I always hope to be caught out, just once, by something nice. But still to no avail. Oh well - I try!

  3. Oh no! I want you to love it. ;)
Hang in there. How far in are you?
Things really pick up once they reach her boyfriend and brother.
    *fingers crossed*

  4. Bethany: I understand what you mean. I was dead set against reading the Twilight saga until I actually read it. Within the first chapter or two I was absolutely hooked (and didn't expect to be). I've tried to reread Twilight and I can't. In isolation, no part of the book(s) is drawing me in and making me want to spend time reading. There's a long story behind why I read Twilight in the first place. At some point (seriously) I'm going to do a Twilight post.

@Juju: I'm only on page 49 (chapter 6) and I don't doubt that it's going to pick up. I don't read a lot of science fiction (at least not of this type) and I think that I'm just a bit behind on some of the popular themes. We'll see as it progresses how it turns out!

  5. I recently won this from Laura at The Book Tree in a giveaway. I haven't even read the Twilight Series yet, but I am getting there! And welcome back! I missed you on the blogosphere!

  6. Thanks Julie! It was a good trip!

Read Juju's review of The Host and the comments that follow it (I think it was Juju's...). The book is nothing like Twilight, and I think it would have been easier not having any kind of expectations.

For that matter, the book is picking up some pace now. I won't have a problem getting through it, just potentially more slowly than I normally read.

  7. Oh I just won this in a contest! And your teaser is intriguing I hope I like this one as much as I enjoyed Twilight! I've been hesitant because lightning doesn't strike the same place twice! Or does it?

  8. I read this book last year and I really enjoyed it. It was a bit different, but I thought it was good. I hope it gets better for you.

  9. Rheanna - It is nothing like Twilight. I'm not going to go so far as to say that's a bad thing, but much of what I thought was done skillfully in Twilight is different in The Host.

Yvonne - It's getting better. Thanks. The first few chapters were just... confusing, I suppose. There was too much information inadequately explained, especially for someone who doesn't read a lot of science fiction!

  10. My stomach could give me away sometimes! And I definitely know what it's like to be willing to wait for a man. Great tease! I hope it picks up for you!
